The fact: you installed Primavera P6 V7.0 in a standalone machine with Windows 7 64 bit operating system, and you are configuring the Oracle database connection for Primavera, then you got the error below:

Bad public user name or password. database server error: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.

To fix this problem, you need to do the things below:

1. Check if Oracle database server is installed, and if it's installed , you should see over 6 files in C:\oraclexe\oradata\XE.

Database Server Error: ORA-12170: TNS:Connect timeout occurred ;

You just finished Primavera P6 Version 7 installation using standalone mode, and you are brought to configure database connection wizard, and you followed the screen and accepted the default settings, and in the final screen, you got the error below:

Bad public user name or password. Database Server Error: ORA-12170: TNS:Connect timeout occurred

To troubleshoot this issue, you need to do the followings:

1. Open a Comand Prompt (Dos Command Window), and type the following command:

       sqlplus privuser/privuser@XE

Bad public user name or password.

When you configure Project Management to connect to  database server. If you receive the errors below:

My P6 tried to connect to Oracle database, but it gave the error below when I configured the database for P6:

“Bad private user name or password. Check the public group ID. Database Server Error: ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied”

What will happen to my databases if I reinstall Primavera Project Management?

Your databases will not be affected if you re-install.

Whenever you re-install Primavera P5/P6, the installation will overwrite only the P5/P6 software and not the databases.  You data and projects will still be accessible from the newly installed software.

How can I tell what version of Primavera P5/P6 is installed?

Primavera P5 / P6 Project Management Client version and Database version information can be found by logging into the Primavera Project Management Client Application.
Follow these steps:

  1. Click on Help, About Primavera.
